The hospital was formally inaugurated on 1st July,1987 by the chief minister of Kerala. The hospital gradually established almost all departments, one by one, to keep up with its commitment to provide advanced medical facilities that are not readily available in this part of the country.

The main block of the hospital is housed in the heart of the city. The beautiful palace has been totally converted to have modern Intensive Care areas, Operations Theaters and Laboratories .This was done with special care to retain the old elegance and splendor of the palace, both outside and inside the hospital.

A modern hospital block in 8 floors was completed a few years ago, increasing the bed strength to 250. Special attention was given to make the new construction in harmony with the existing architecture, with sufficient open spaces while providing comfortable accommodation inside. Emphasis was given to affordable independent rooms, for those who want that extra comfort and luxury.
